been climbing. in indiana alone rescue crews are searching debris in four different counties. good evening. these tornadoes have impacted millions of americans across several states. at least 28 # people are now dead and there may be more. >> it is amazing this outbreak we have been seeing. one of the hardest hit states the state of indiana. four people confirmed dead. two towns hit the hardest where the junior and senior high school was hurt. marysville described as being "completely gone." >> in kentucky 12 people are confirmed dead there. strong storms moved through knocking down trees and power lines. >> and parts of tennessee including nashville seeing golf ball sized hail bouncing off of cars. >> the tornado count could be close to 100 before this is over. jay gray has more tonight. >> a day of watches and warnings gave way to this devastating reality. >> it was unreal. things were falling. things were coming off the walls, noise, crashes, glass flying everywhere. it was like a dream. >> reporter: a bad dream for thousands across tornado alley as dozens of powerful tornadoes

tomorrow to search for any debris of lives before the storm. jay grey, nbc news, henryville, indiana. >> there are also stories of survival tonight. in se lemme, indiana, a 2-year-old girl was found ten miles from her home in the middle of the field. her house destroyed, her entire family gone. the child is in critical condition at an indiana hospital. and, a dramatic escape for a dozen students in henryville, indiana. officials there say school was dismissed early for bad weather. bus drivers noticed the storms and turned around. the kids got to safety just moments before winds picked up a bus and threw it into a building. chuck bell is in the storm center now with more on these storms. >> when it comes down to tornadoes, the most important thing that you're up against is the intensity of the storm itself. what do i mean by that? well, we rate tornadoes on the ef scale. and only one to two percent of all tornadoes that occur land in that top one or two categories there. only one or two percent are an f4 or an f5. but those type of storms represent 65% of all of the fatal days that w

from those tornadoes that tore through indiana, kentucky and tennessee on friday. four people -- 40 that is, 40 people now confirmed dead. the weather is not helping in the recovery. jim is here with more on that. >> thank you. survivors of the storms are trying to regain a sense of normalcy, but that's being complicated by several inches of wet, heavy snow. a big danger to already fragile buildings there. they could come down under the weight. the soggy and cold conditions add to the dismal scene homeowners look over. this snow covered slap is where stephanie decker used to live. as the tornado approaches her home, she rushed her 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter down into the basement. she used her body to shield the children as the home collapsed around them. the kids weren't hurt but decker lost both her legs. >> i prayed to have the strength to survive. i wanted these kids to have a mom, and that i did not want them to grow up without me. >> how strong she is, and, you know, i knew before but people talk about all the time, the sacrifice of a mother. mothers will do anythi

, a dramatic look at the power of a tornado as it ripped through an indiana school earlier this month. the school in henryville just released this surveillance video. cameras caught the moment when the ef-4 tornado struck the building. school had just let out, but buses returned to get the kids out of the storm. minutes later, the roof blew off. the school's gym turned into debris. about 80 students, teacher and staff, were safe. they all took cover in a hallway. that is chilling. >> wow! and it's that really warm weather that's contributing to that -- to causing those tornadoes, isn't it? >> 100%. that's exactly what happened in michigan. they saw a couple tornadoes there. that one was eight miles long, the path. so you're going to continue to see this as long as we continue to be on the warm side of things. and we are going to continue to be on the warm side of things over the eastern two-thirds of the nation. so i do expect more severe weather over the next couple of months, as a matter of fact. but nothing in the immediate future. that's the good news. out there right now, not bad
